HALLOWEENTIME 2015.

The best time of the year is upon us once again! For me, that means lots of horror movies, apple cider, and cool strolls through leaf-strewn streets. Though, life is a little busier than normal lately, so I will forego my usual goal of a movie per day. Still, there should be plenty of time for:

• Halloween on Halloween, like I've done since '99.
• The Walking Dead, season 5. Once this hits Netflix, I'll catch up on Rick & company's adventures with the cannibals.
• Freddy vs. Jason: The Chronocinethon: all 20 classic (and not-so-classic) slasher movies in the order they were released to cinemas. (R.I.P. Wes Craven and thank you for so much)
• The usual assortment of incredibly crappy flicks I seem to torture myself with every year. I've got a load of movies due to arrive from Vinegar Syndrome which should fit the bill nicely.

During this year's HALLOWEENTIME, I thought I might pay a visit to:

• Halloween, as always and always since 1999. 
  
• The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.  It's the 40th anniversary.  A new blu-ray just came out.  I gotta.  Might even watch the rest of the series to see if IV is as goofy as I remember.
• Nightbreed: The Director's Cut. Nobody makes monsters like Clive. Man, am I geeked about this one.
• Crown International Pictures.  During a summertime '80s cheez kick, I picked up just about all of those cheap 12-movie packs put out by Mill Creek.  C'mon, I hear Don't Answer the Phone is supposed to be good.
• Dead of Winter, Legendary Encounters, and Betrayal at House on the Hill.  We're living in the Golden Age of Board Gaming! Join us!
• Flint Horror Con 4.  It ain't a Halloweentime around these parts without a FHC.  Looking forward to the new location this year.  Which reminds me, I've gotta get to work on the trailer compilation for the movie room...
• Leaf piles and cemeteries and cider mills.  Just the usual haunts of autumn, made better when you bring the kids along.

Halloween, the high holiday for horror geeks, has no equal.  When is the science fiction fest?  Which day do comedy kooks celebrate?  Would there ever be a spaghetti western wingding?  No, horror is special; it's primal and emotional, tapping into the deepest parts of our psychology and yanking at those uncomfortable pieces we normally pretend do not exist.  Something this unique deserves more than a mere day of honor at the end of October.  I say: let Halloweentime last for six weeks!

Here, I'll record my thoughts as I watch a horror movie or three every day for the next forty-two.  Feel free to leave a comment or a movie-watching suggestion.  I have no particular movie plans for this season, though I'm off to Flint to catch some flicks for a couple of days in October.  I'll be up there first on the 11th for the It Came From The Local showing of free movies and then on the 20th for the 2nd annual Flint Horror Con.  Both should be a ball o' fun!

The leaves are already beginning to change, there's a cool breeze in the air and the scent of pumpkin spices can often be caught...

Halloweentime is my favorite six weeks of the year.  The skittering of dead leaves on the ground, the scent of mulled cider cooking on the stove and the appearance of plastic, severed heads at the local grocery store all contribute to a season like no other.

Here, I'll write about the flicks I watch throughout my forty-two day fest.  My goal is to watch at least one movie a day... if not more.  To that end, I've got a metric ton of horror front-loaded in my Netflix queue and more sitting on my shelves and hard drives.

My viewing plans include keeping up with this year's crop of Horrorfest movies, now dubbed the After Dark Originals, and the two new Ghost House Underground offerings.  Likewise, I've got to catch up with last year's Fangoria Frightfest films.  I'm also looking forward to checking out The Ward, Stake Land, I Saw the Devil, and Let Me In.  And, as per tradition, I've got to watch both Trick 'r Treat and the original Halloween.

Outside of the film-watchin', I'll be attending two horror conventions this season.  I love the hell out of these things.  There's nothing quite like being surrounded by hundreds of fellow horror nuts (it's black T-shirts as far as the eye can see).  On October 1st, it's Cinema Wasteland.  There, I need to shake Frank Henenlotter's hand and thank him for the wondrous insanity of Brain Damage. On October 29th, it'll be the first annual Flint Horror Con, where I've got to buy more of Steve Jencks' awesome horror movie poster interpretations.

When the scent of fallen leaves arrives on autumn-chilled gusts, I know that Halloweentime is just around the corner.  It's the absolute best time of the year with my favorite holiday anchored right in the middle.  But, I'm not content with a mere single night of horror.  That just doesn't seem like enough time to confront and laugh away the demons that haunt this troubled world.  As such, I've decided to expand Halloween into a six-week feast of horror movies, apple cider, candy and pumpkin carving, all leading up to the big day at the end of October.

Here, you'll find my ramblings about the horror movies and TV episodes I watch during my 42-day celebration.  Feel free to drop a comment or two if the desire strikes.  I'm always up for some good horror movie recommendations.

My watchin' plans for this year include all eight of this year's Horrorfest movies (seeing's how I finally got caught up with them last year), catching up with the entire Saw series (the idea of Saw 3D seems so ridiculously cheezy, I feel like I shouldn't miss it in the theater) and getting through as many Argento films as possible (I've long been embarrassed to admit I've not seen most of his work).  Martyrs and The Human Centipede are definitely on this year's docket as well.  So, too, are [REC] and Survival of the Dead.  And, I must watch Trick 'r Treat again; I have a feeling it's going to become a yearly tradition.

Finally, as I've done for the past 12 years now, I will close out the six weeks by watching John Carpenter's Halloween on Halloween night.  Battling inevitable sleep in the wee hours of November 1st as I watch Sam Loomis chase Michael Myers is my favorite way to cap off the season.
